With over 40 years of experience in franchising and distribution law, completing transactions in over 40 countries, J.H. is one of the most tenured attorneys on the Plave Koch team, and the only one to hail from the great State of Texas. Before entering private practice in 1994, J.H. served as in-house counsel for a number of corporations, laying the foundation for understanding business from an insider’s perspective, with responsibility for managing both in-house and outside attorneys and ultimately overseeing the legal affairs of a $500 million company from the General Counsel’s chair.

Shortly after entering private practice with one of the largest law firms in Texas, J.H. was selected by the largest convenience store company in the world (where he had spent part of his in-house career) to handle all of its legal affairs for its international operations. And when he decided to open his own practice, that client insisted on following him. Under his oversight, that franchising system expanded from 30,000 stores to over 85,000 stores today, having the largest number of locations of any kind under a single brand. He has been responsible for the legal work for hundreds of transactions in over 25 countries for that client. As the quantity and complexity of that client’s legal affairs grew, he decided to join the newly formed Plave Koch law firm in 2007 as Of Counsel to better facilitate their collaboration in addressing the wide array of legal needs.

J.H. has also represented through the years a variety of clients from disparate industries, including hotels, restaurants, childcare, tutorial services and others. He brings a strong set of problem-solving, business-oriented skills to his clients that transcend his highly seasoned legal skills.

While J.H. has a beautiful wife and family of 7 children and 10 grandchildren that occupy the center of his affections, along with his love of sports, politics, the world of ideas and serving others, his passion for providing value-added, business-oriented legal solutions for his clients burns as brightly as ever.
